Violot-Guillemard

For six generations Violot-Guillemard – now headed by Joannès – has farmed vineyards in and around the village of Pommard. The domaine has always known that great wines can only come from the best grapes. To that end Joannès takes great care in tilling his land and vineyards have been under organic management since 1999. As a proud successor of his ancestors’ heritage, he strives to keep the terroir healthy so its quality can be appreciated in each of the wines.

Joannès – in the tradition of his father Thierry – approaches winemaking choices to ensure that they truly reflect the terroir: no yeast inoculation, no reverse osmosis, very few technical interventions, and not too much new oak. These endeavors guarantee that winemaking won’t overshadow nor alter the taste of the variety and the terroir.

Violot-Guillemard owns 15 acres of prestigious vineyards in the appellations of; Pommard, Volnay, Meursault, Monthelie, and Beaune. The winery has also begun to work with a select group of growers wherein Joannès can control the farming to his exact standards.

  • Pommard 1er Cru Epenots

One of the two 1er Cru climats up for promotion to Grand Cru. Southeast exposition. The vines are located at the beginning of the slopes which brings out the finesse.

  • Pommard 1er Cru Rugiens

The other 1er Cru up for Grand Cru status. A powerful and virile wine tamed by de-stemming and moderate punching down. More weight than Epenots. Infinite length.

  • Pommard 1er Cru La Platière

It is the flat stones that give this climat its name. La Platière faces due south on stony-clay-limestone soils. Shallow and steep. The wines are of great finesse. Well structured too.

  • Pommard 1er Cru Les Fremiers

Les Fremiers sits on the ‘Volnay’ side of the village of Pommard giving it a blend of Pommard power and Volnay silk. A touch of ballast. A little strength.

  • Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches (rouge)

Beaune 1er cru facing southeast. Bees were once called "Honey Flies", and many hives once bordered this clos. Supple and silky wines, very elegant with a very good length.

  • Bourgogne Les Maisons-Dieu

The name of Maison-Dieu is named for an old hospice that served pilgrims in the 17th century. Pinot Noir on the edge of the Pommard Village it was “Pommard” until 1938.

  • Meursault

40 year-old vines. East-Northeast exposure makes it possible to obtain fairly lively Meursault. The white wines are not stirred preserving reduction and liveliness. Stony.
